5 Reasons why Acupuncture Treatment is right for you

Is Sandra’s acupuncture story similar to yours?

imfl-acupuncture-blog_image-stones_red_plant

Sandra was sitting in my waiting room. I remember the look of pain etched across her face, as she sat slumped in her chair, with eyes partially closed. Sandra suffered from chronic migraine headaches.

My nurse led her into my office. The first words she uttered were:

“My husband insisted I see a local acupuncture practitioner in Phoenix, but I have no idea what acupuncture can do for me.”

Acupuncture provides you with remarkable health benefits in treating:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Migraines
  • Allergies
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

As well as a host of other health issues. But for some, Acupuncture still seems like a pretty foreign idea.  Here are 5 reasons why Acupuncture may just be the perfect approach to take your health to the next level.

1) It’s all about energy

Acupuncture works on the innate energy of a person. One of the fundamental principals of acupuncture is all health issues are energy issues (too low, out of balance, or blocked, etc.).  By correcting the body’s energy, Acupuncture is treating the problem at the root.  This is treating a cause, not just covering up a symptom.

When the right style of Acupuncture is applied (a big subject unto itself!) the vital energy that flows through that painful or diseased area is addressed and corrected.

This is the Qi (Chi) that Chinese medicine practitioners talk so much about.  When the Qi is corrected, your painful shoulder, knee, hip, etc. can finally begin to heal!

2) Oh, Those Wonderful Side-Effects from acupuncture treatment

You may be surprised to learn that Acupuncture has side effects; Good Ones!

As we correct the flow of Qi in the body, the whole body gets healthier and stronger.  As we improve the flow of vital energy to one part of the body, the whole body is bathed in this renewed, flowing Qi. Long-standing health problems simply melt away as the body as a whole begins to heal itself.  It’s great fun to when our patients at Solutions come in with lists of complaints they hadn’t even thought to mention to us that have now magically disappeared!

3) Acupuncture Saves You Money

Come on! Really?”  Yes, Really! By treating the cause of your health problem, Acupuncture doesn’t just fix a single issue, it actually makes you healthier.  Acupuncture is about getting you well.  It’s about getting free of drugs, doctors and procedures and all the incessant medical bills that come with being un-well.  So yes, you might not get coverage up front (or maybe you will) but you’ll save bundles down the road.  Plus, with more people using creative insurance tools like Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA’s) that do cover Acupuncture and Naturopathic Medicine, the savings possibilities are even greater!

4) Acupuncture Doesn’t Hurt

Acupuncture needles are not like the needles we think of when we got to the doctor’s and get a shot or have blood taken.  Those needles are hollow.  They actually displace the flesh much like a hole-punch on paper.

Acupuncture needles are thin, flexible, wires – basically like little pieces of guitar string.  They’re whisker thin and solid, so they slide into the skin virtually painlessly.  The only discomfort associated with acupuncture is after the needle is inserted and then moved a little deeper into the acupuncture point; if a point has a lot of congested, blocked Qi, a quick dull twinge may be felt.  This is a fleeting sensation called the de Qi and it is a sign that the stuck Qi has been unstuck!

Our rule at Solutions is that if anything feels even the slightest bit uncomfortable, we take that needle out – no exceptions.

5) Acupuncture treatment has an “ending”

Although many people will use Acupuncture for preventative care, or just for health optimization, Acupuncture is not one of those therapies that you need to keep doing in order to maintain the benefits you get.  After you reach, what we at Solutions call, correction, and your energy is improved to the point that your health issue is healed; you’re done.  You graduate!

You now have a new level of health and vitality that is all yours!  You own it!  Many of our patients who live in the Phoenix area will choose to get a treatment once-a-month or so just keep improving their new found vitality and to help deal with the many of stresses of life.  But that’s just about enjoying the icing; the cake – the fundamental improvements to your core health and well-being – that’s yours to enjoy forever.

How to Succeed at New Year’s Resolutions : Part 1

A powerful mixture of acupuncture, naturopathic medicine and change

january_1-resized-600

One of my greatest pleasures in performing the powerful mixture of acupuncture & naturopathic medicine at our Phoenix clinic is to witness change. Change occurs by eliminating the chronic pain of migraine headaches, reducing pain from angry soft tissues, and inflamed nerves in the neck and back, or reversing the devastating effects of anxiety and depression.

Many of us find change is an elusive, powerful force just beyond our reach. We want to be:

  • Healthier
  • Happier
  • More Organized
  • A Better Spouse
  • etc…

But so often our hopes for change remain just that; hope.  Why is that so many of our aspirations go unfulfilled?  Why cant’ we finally just lose the weight, control our anger, get to bed a half-hour earlier, pray/meditate daily..?

Why do our resolutions fizzle?

We need to look closely at what is motivating us to change to understand why so many of our resolutions fizzle out so quickly we need to look closely at what is motivating us to change.  That’s right, the motivation behind the change is the key to it’s success or failure – it’s the engine that makes the whole process move.

Self-change is typically motivated by one of two forces; Self-Hate (“I can’t stand my thighs“) or Self-Love (“I deserve to be healthy, it’s time to start paying more attention to my eating habits“).

Change motivated by self-hate always fails. This is why diets have a 90+% failure rate. You think no-one’s figured out the science of weight loss yet? No, in truth most any diet book in the discount bin will get the pounds off if you do what they say, the problem is – as always in life – the follow-through.

What are the odds against change?

So let’s say Peggy Perspiration wakes up January 1 with a fire-in-the-belly to finally get-in-shape!  What kind of odds would the boys in Vegas give her on actually achieving her goal?  Pretty slim.  In fact, the Gym industry counts on this time of year to sign-up tons of new members who they know they will never see past February.

So how do they know that Peggy is going to fail?  Are those bloated gym rats psychic?  Are all those protein shakes making their brains as big as their biceps?

Actually, they just know the simple truth that most attempts at self-change fail and they have the statistics to prove it.

So what do we do about poor, sweet Peggy?  How do we make this the year the year that she finally succeeds at her health & fitness goals?

Motivation to change

We start by asking her to be honest about her motivation.  If she thinks she’s going to motor through 12 months of calorie deprivation and Spin classes fueled by “My butt’s too big!” motivation, she’s simply kidding herself.  The bottom-line is; even with all our negative self-talk, we actually love ourselves too much to punish ourselves for any real length of time.

Self-protective mechanisms swing into full gear and pretty soon Peggy’s rattling off excuses like “I need to work late; it’s that time of the month or I’ll work out extra hard tomorrow…” and that shiny new gym card that she clipped to her key chain gets used less and less and less.

Peggy’s New Year’s Resolution is all about how she’s not good enough. “Not Good Enough” energy burns hot and bright in the beginning; It’s can blast you off the couch and into action. But at it’s heart, it’s a mirage. It burns out as fast as it ignited. Soon it turns on you and becomes self-recrimination; “See, I’ve done it again, another diet failure, relationship failure, etc.”

Only Self-Love can provide the energy for lasting change. It may not burn as bright in the beginning, but it’s a steady flame that helps you put fork-to-mouth, sneaker-to-pavement, head-to-pillow day after day after day.

Part 2

In Part 2 we’ll talk about how to cultivate this subtle, powerhouse energy of Self-Love.  And we’ll look into our Naturopathic toolbox for some Acupuncture & Nutrition tips to help us keep moving steadily towards our goals.

What changes are you thinking about for 2012? Please share some of your  ideas about change with our community. It’ll mean a lot to all of us.

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Acupuncture is About Getting to the Point! (And the Point is Change) : New Year’s Resolutions Part II

Acupuncture treatment can eliminate your pain

Most people, when they hear that I run an Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine Clinic in Phoenix, think that I’m treating back pain all day.  And while I do see my fair share of bad backs, I’m privileged to help people with all sorts of health problems both physical and emotional.  In truth, if there’s one thing that I’m working on all day with people it could be summed by one word: “change”.  People come to Solutions™ because they want something in their life to change; their migraines, allergies, depression, IBS, etc.

Julie’s acupuncture treatment story

Julie came to our clinic after being referred by her therapist.  She had struggled with fibromyalgia-like symptoms as well as depression and anxiety.  Years of psychotherapy and psych-meds had failed to stabilize her condition.  She hoped that our unique blend of Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine could somehow help her break free.

Now, having completed her treatment at Solutions™, Julie is like a new person.  She is pain-free, depression-free and anxiety-free.  In short, Julie did what so many people spend their lives trying to do; Julie changed.  But how did she succeed when so many other fail?

Solutions acupuncture adds important diagnostic insight

One of the secrets of our practice is our diagnostic techniques.  I’ll blog about them in more detail on another day, but suffice it say that we were able to diagnose Julie on a more fundamental level than anyone had ever done before.  You see, we looked not only at her psychological and biochemical make up, we looked at her energetic make up.

By understanding the unique functions of the different Acupuncture meridians; how they affect us physically and emotionally, once we were able to ascertain which of Julie’s meridians were out of balance we were able to heal her on the deepest level.  Once the energetics or meridian system of her body was balanced it was like someone took the emergency brake off in a car.  Julie sprang forward into her life – she was able to exercise, enjoy creative pursuits, and build meaningful relationships.  As her body healed and felt stronger she gained more confidence.  As she was liberated from destructive, anxious thinking she was able to move in the direction of her passions.

Change is very possible. In fact it’s everyone’s birth right

to grow and evolve in this life.  But we need the tools to free us from the shackles of dis-ease that keep us bound to destructive habits and dysfunctional patterns of living.  Balance Method Acupuncture, when applied correctly and integrated with targeted Naturopathic therapies is a powerful tool to facilitate real change.

One Needle Cure – My Office Manager’s Acupuncture Experience

hole_in_oneHeadache meet Acupuncture…Acupuncture meet Headache

Those of you who have been to our Phoenix Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine Clinic know that Sjon (pronounced “Shawn”) is the glue that holds it all together.  While I’m buzzing in and out treatment rooms and flying from consult to treatment to consult, Sjon is the conductor making it all run smoothly.

“I’ve had a headache since the holidays…”

It’s a total cliché, but working side-by-side in our Phoenix center with me everyday you’d think Sjon would get all the Acupuncture treatment she could ever want. Not the case. It’s run-run-run from open till close for our dear Sjon.  So when she stopped me to tell me she’s had a headache for over two weeks, I knew she must really be hurting.  “Let’s go!” I jumped, “grab a table.”  “No, no”, Sjon protested, “cant you just give me a couple of needles while I’m at the front desk and let me do my work?”

Fortunately, I practice a classical style of Acupuncture where practitioners pride themselves on profound effects from fewest possible needles.  I took Sjon’s non-phone using hand and applied a small needle to one point.  “It’s gone!” Sjon, stuttered, wide-eyed in amazement.  With one needle her weeks long headache was sent packing.

Feeling is believing

Sjon sees our patients amazing recoveries everyday, but even she was taken aback by the power of this unique style of Acupuncture.  That’s why we always tell patients who are skeptical, “You don’t have to believe in our Acupuncture for it to work.”  The same way gravity doesn’t need you to believe in it to work; it just does.

So whether you’ve been dealing with chronic pain, digestive disorders, psychological issues such as anxiety and depression -I hope you’ll give this unique style of Acupuncture a try. So many people give-up hope of ever feeling well or resign themselves to a life a pill popping and compromised vitality. It doesn’t have to be that way!  Sometimes I feel like getting in one of those planes that fly those big advertising banners across the sky with the words “It doesn’t have to be that way!” printed in 20 foot letters!

Even if you’re in a different city, we can help you find someone trained in this tradition.  You owe to yourself and to the people you love.

Who knows, maybe we have a one-needle solution for you!

Grief: An Acupuncture & Naturopathic Perspective

Can Acupuncture Treatment Heal a Broken Heart?

sad_eye

Joe Paterno died today.

I don’t want to be seen as judging the merits of the end of his career at all so I’ll just use a quote from CNN.com : “Joe Paterno, whose tenure as the most successful coach in major college football history ended abruptly in November amid allegations that he failed to respond forcefully enough to a sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant, died Sunday, his family said. He was 85″.

A recent study in the journal Circulation found that the risk of heart attack increase 21 times in the 24 hour period after the loss of a loved one.

The phenonom of grief causing physical illness is not a new discovery, yet the mechanics of how it happens remains a mystery to modern medicine.  Luckily it was not a mystery to practitioners of Chinese Medicine thousands of years ago.

Acupuncture Heals the Emotional Body as Well as the Physical Body

Practitioners of Acupuncture understand that each of the famous meridians that make up the Acupuncture anatomy of the body is responsible for a different emotional state.  The processing of that emotion is the responsiblity of that meridian.  When that emotion becomes more than the meridian can handle, that meridian can start having problems; manifesting in both emotional and physical symptoms.

The meridian associated with the emotion of Grief is the Lung Meridian.  The Lung Meridian is central to our health.  In Acupuncture theory, the Lung is responsible for taking the Qi (“chee”) or Vital Energy from the atmosphere and bringing it into the body.  Moreover, it is said the Lungs command the Qi and that all the other meridians are dependent on the Lungs to do their respective jobs of transporting and utilizing the Qi throughout the body.

The Lung meridian is also the aspect of the body most closely associated with the Western Concept of the Immune System.  Often, inftectious illnesses are first seen in symptoms associated with the Lung Meridian; cough, runny nose, etc.  It is both our sustaining system and self-protective system.

This being the case, from an Acupuncture perspective, we see how people who are burdened with Grief can suffer from more frequent colds, flus and more serious immune challenges.

Using Acupuncture and Naturopathic diagnostic techniques one can determine if a person’s health issues are coming from the Lung Meridian and possibly have their roots in a deeply experienced Grief.  It was well known amongst the early German Homeopaths that freqeunt sighing seen in a patient was a sign of supressed grief.  Here we see a physical manifestation of Lung issues; sighing, associated with Grief from a completely different medical culture.

The point of all this, is that if the origin of a person’s particular illness happens to stem from Grief, then unless that Grief is addressed, the imbalance that’s causing their illness will remain. Attempts to help them by other means may be incomplete at best and futile at worst.

But using Acupuncture and Naturopathic medicine we can actually help the body process that Grief – move-it-through so that it becomes less toxic and less of an overwhelming energy in the body.  This is not psychotherapy, this is medical treatment that honors the fact that emotions are a real energy in the body and need to be addressed.  The patient may have no awareness that their Grief is being treated. They will often feel inexplicably lighter or they may even sometimes have an outpouring of tears as old Grief leaves the body.  Regardless, they will move towards balance and the health of the Lung Meridian, this vital, fundamental determiner of health can be restored.

I’ll close with another quote from the same CNN.com article on the demise of Joe Paterno:

“The longtime Penn State head coach was diagnosed with what his family had called a treatable form of lung cancer shortly after the university’s Board of Trustees voted to fire him.”

imfl-conversations-accupuncture_treatmentWhat are your feelings about Joe Paterno? Was he treated fairly by Penn State? Did you realize acupuncture treatment can help emotional distress?

Acupuncture and the Golfer’s Hole-in-One

Acupuncture Treatment Produces the Game of a Lifetime for Phoenix Golfer

golfer

“Well, I had to buy a round of drinks at the club the other day,”  Bernie complained wryly.

“Really?” I bit, “What for?”

“I shot my first Hole-in-one after my last Acupuncture treatment.  Drinks were on me!” Bernie grinned.

What’s great about this story, is that Bernie sought acupuncture treatment from our office because he was suffering from severe pain in his knee – even after surgery, physical therapy and a host of other interventions.

It was affecting his ability to walk, drive a car, and engage in his greatest passion…golf.

Acupuncture & Oriental Pulse Diagnosis get to the Root of the Problem

We were able to identify Bernie’s problem as “Blood Stagnation” with a thorough physical examination in combination with the Oriental Pulse Diagnosis (A Chinese medical diagnosis describing a blockage of the flow of vital energy and nutrients in a channel).

We quickly had Bernie on the mend by using our unique approach to Acupuncture, which follows the classical teaching of Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan (a radically different and more powerful style than what is conventionally practiced in the modern Acupuncture clinics).

Bernie describes his treatment at Solutions as “life-changing,” rather than simply a resolution of his knee pain.  He is less stressed, enjoying life more, and boasts a whole new positive outlook on life.  Bernie’s family is thrilled at the literal and figurative spring in his step.  And of course Bernie’s golfing buddies are thrilled about all the free drinks!

This is just one of the many examples of patients significantly improving the overall quality  of their lives through Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine. We are blessed to share these results every day at Solutions.

The Solutions Acupuncture Insomnia Cure: Part 1

Acupuncture & Naturopathic Tricks for a Good Night’s Sleep

insomnia

You’re lying in bed.  It’s late. You’ve got a big day tomorrow and you know you need to get some serious shut-eye to be at your best.  But minutes turn to hours and you’re still wide-eyed into the wee hours of the morning.  Sound familiar?

Studies show that up to 1/4 of all American adults will have some issue with sleeplessness in a given year. 10 to 20% report more severe sleep issues.  We call it Chronic Insomnia when your sleep issues last for more than 4 weeks.

The 5 Habits of Highly Effective Sleepers

In our Phoenix Acupuncture & Naturopathic medicine office, we alwasy ask people about their sleep quality.  As the great Acupuncturist, Dr. Robert Chu says “Sleep time is healing time.”  If people are not sleeping enough, they are not giving their body enought time to heal.  You can think of sleep as kind of like pulling your car into a pit stop; as you rest, your pit-crew of self-healing resources are chan

Despite our iphones, stem-cell research and artistic accomplishments, human beings are still just as plugged in to the cycles of nature as any other species on the planet.  The world was designed with cycles and rythms and we ignore these rythms to our own peril.

The rising and setting of the sun have marked effects on certain hormonal levels in our bodies. For example, Cortisol, a stimulating hormone rises dramatically in the early morning hours, it then plateaus around mid-day and then falls sharply at night.  This provides an early morning burst of energy, sustained energy throughout the day and then a rapid decrease in stimulation at night so we can reach a deep level of sleep.

By adjusting our own schedule to nature’s schedule, wonderous things begin to happen.  After a short adjustment period, most people will find themselves naturally energized as the sun rises, having sustained energy throughout the day and then find themselves automatically drifting into sleep-mode a couple of hours after sunset.

This is a simple solution but its power should not be underestimated.

2. Snack Attack

I don’t know where this whole thing about not eating after a certain hour started.  I think Oprah touted it as a weight loss strategy back in the 80’s.  Regardless, it’s a real dis-service to sleepers everywhere.  Let’s say you have dinner around 6:30 pm and you hit the hay around 10.  And then you wake up at 6:30 am.  If you dont’ eat anything after dinner, that’s roughly 12 hours that you are going without food.  You are essentially fasting for half a day (and half your life if this is your pattern!).

Although occasional fasting can be a great health strategy, this nightly fast is the enemy of rest.  When you’re body gets hungry, all sorts of hormonal and chemical changes occur.  Stimulating chemicals are secreted that actually make you more awake and alert; your body wants you ready to pounce on the next buffalo, or iguana that saunters by so you can get some grub!

Conversely, a small snack of some healthy fat and just a bit of complex carbs gives the signal to your body that the tank is full and you can downshift the hunter reflexes for a while. I suggest a small dessert cup with a few warmed (very important!) sweet potato slices, pecans and walnuts with cinanammon and ginger sprinkled on top (you’re gonna love it!) or a glass or warm coconut milk with a couple of squares of dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa content).

3.  The Power of the Dark Side

Having been built to follow the natural rythms of sunrise and sunset, we are extemely sensitive to changes in light within our environment.  Artificial light, particularly the light emitted from computer screens, e-readers and smart phones mimic natural light in such a way that our body becomes confused about whether it is day or night.  Should it be secreting calming, sedating chemicals or stimulating ones?

By adjusting our indoor light exposure to somewhat mimic the day/night cycle, we prime ourselves to fall into an easy, deep sleep. This means turning off the TV and unplugging from the laptop at least an hour-and-a-half before bed.  Indoor lights should be turned down as well to create a soft, dim enviroment.  Yellow lights are a great resource and having a lamp or two with a yellow light bulb that you turn on in the evening as you turn off your regular lights is a great strategy.

For reading in bed, many yellow reading lights are sold commercially and some smart phones have apps for that as well.

We’ll continue in part two with some more tricks from our Phoenix Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine office for blissful sack-time.

Have you ever had difficult falling or staying asleep?  Tell us about your sleep strategies.

ging your tires, putting gas in your tank, changing a belt or two… Make sense?

That being said, insomnia can be one of the most difficult problems that conventional medical doctors encounter. Fortunately, combining classical Acupuncture & Naturopathic medicine often solves the problem where other therapies have failed.

Here are 5 steps we use in our Phoenix office to help turn insomnia around and help people get the most out of their pillow time:

1.  The Rythm Method

The Solutions Acupuncture Insomnia Cure: Part 2

Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine Can Cure Insomnia

imfl-conversations-accupuncture_treatmentIn part 1 of this article we discussed the rampant problem of poor sleep and insomnia and I gave away 3 of our favorite secrets for fixing sleep problems.  The first 3 techniques were really things that you the sleeper can do to get things back on track.  Now, let’s talk about what we do in our Phoenix clinic using Acupuncture and Naturopathic approaches to solve sleep problems.

3. Have a Heart

In a previous blog post I talked about how every Acupuncture Meridian is responsible for different aspects of our health.  The same is true with regards to sleep.  Although many different meridians will have some bearing on sleep quality, the main regulator of sleep in the meridian system is the Heart Meridian.

Many people who suffer with insomnia will ply themselves with all sorts of sedative medications from Benadryl to Ambien in attempts to knock themselves unconscious. What many of them are suprised to learn, is that sleep is actually not just a process of konking out; it takes energy to fall asleep and remain asleep!

When I conduct an Oriental Pulse Diagnosis session on a new insomnia patient at Solutions it’s not uncommon to find an overt weakness in the Heart Meridian.  When the Heart Meridian is weak, sleep is disturbed.  You see, sleep is actually an active process whereby the Heart Meridian is anchoring the body in somnalance.  It’s like the Heart Meridian is creating a cacoon of rest that buffers the body from external stimuli and allows it to mantain this altered state of consciousness that we call sleep.

Without enough Heart Meridian energy sleep is often hard to find and very easily disturbed.

Once we identify the particular nature of the Heart Meridian imbalance we can use Balance Method Acupuncture to correct the problem and restore the patient’s ability to enjoy restful sleep.

4. Urine for a Big Suprise!

One of our trade secrets at Solutions Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine for solving sleep issues is conducting a little known laboratory test known as a urinary neurotransmitter assay. With this test, the metabolites of the different chemicals at work in the nervous sytem can be measured as they exit the body through the urine. So, your urine can tell you about what kind of brain chemistry you’ve got going on in your head? – pee-cicesly!

The results of this testing show us the relative levels of stimulatory versus inhibitatory nerotransmitters at work in the body.  Too much stimulatory or too little inhibatory nervous system signalling can make a person feel stressed, amped and unable to sleep.  Once we identify which neurotransmitter levels are out of balance, we can use targeted nutraceuticals to correct the issue without the side-effects of conventional pharmaceutical interventions.

Putting It All Together

When we combine the 5 strategies of The Solutions Acupuncture Insomnia Cure, great things happen.  The magic of this system is that it combines patient empowerment with cutting edge natural medicine.  It’s a winning formula for making radical changes in one’s sleep and overall health.

Acupuncture Secrets for Obliterating Migraines – For Good!

The #1 Acupuncture Technique that Stops Migraines Cold

Nothing makes me happier than when a new Migraine patient comes to our Phoenix office for our unique style of Acupuncture Treatment. I hate migraines,  I really do.  And there’s just nothing more fun than helping someone who’s been suffering with Migraines for years, to finally get rid of their debilitating headaches.  Thanks to my teacher, The Great Dr. Tan, I feel like I’ve been given almost magical powers to get rid of migraines.

In truth, there’s nothing really magical about it – it’s just plain old science.  Mind you, it’s science from another culture, so it can seem a bit “mystical”, but it’s nothing short of science.

Balance Method View of Headaches

points_headIf we look at a Acupuncture Meridian Chart we see the head is covered by 8 seperate meridians.  A migraine can lodge itself in any one of these meridians and will often cover an area that is governed by more than just one meridian.  Knowing exactly which meridian or meridians are involved is the key to getting rid of the pain.

Many classic migraines will focus on the Gallbladder meridian.  That’s the Golden colored meridian on the image to the right. The Gallbladder meridian travels the whole length of the body and comes up the back of the arm and collects around the base of the skull.  If your a migraine sufferer, if you poke around the area where your neck and the back of your skull meet, maybe an inch off the center in either direction, you’ll probably find a real ouchy of a tender spot.  That’s Gall Bladder 20 (GB 20).

For many people a headache will start at GB 20 and come up the side of the head and lodge around the temples – a classic Gall- bladder headache.  Now at this point, a lot of my patients will say, “Hey Doc, I had my gallbladder removed in ’78! How can I be having a ‘gallbladder headache’?”

Don’t get too hung-up on the names of these meridians.  Most of them are pretty loose translations from the Chinese and have little to do with the Western Organ whose name they share.  Gallbladder is actually called the Foot Shao Yang Meridian, and while there is a drop of overlap between it’s function and the Western anatomical gallbladder organ – the meridian concept of gallbladder contains so much more.  So yes, even if you don’t have a gallbladder you can have a gallbladder headache.

Acupuncture to Finally Balance Your Noggin

Now, using our example of our Gallbladder headache, now that we know what meridian is involved, what do we do now?  Just stick a bunch of needles in the gallbladder meridian?  Please no! This is how much of Acupuncture is done in modern times and it’s really been reduced to a form of trigger point massage just using needles instead of thumbs!

Classical, Balance Method Acupuncture looks deeper and asks “If there’s a problem with the flow of Qi in the Gallbladder meridian, well what controls the gallbladder merdian?”.  The classical teaching show us that Gallbladder meridian can be influenced most effectively through the San Jao, Liver and Heart meridians.

Knowing this is like knowing the secret code to shut that migraine down straight away.  When we apply our Acpuncture Technique to the San Jao, Liver and Heart meridians in a very specific pattern, the patient with the Gallbladder Migraine is shocked at the near instant relief they experience.  It’s literally like someone finally found the pain switch and flipped it to off!

This is the power of Balance Method Acupuncture technique and we feel blessed to see it in action everday at our Phoenix clinic.

In our next installment will talk about once that migraine is gone, how do we get it to stay gone!  This is where it gets fun!

Naturopathic Secrets for Obliterating Migraines

Punch #2 of the Acupuncture, Natural Medicine 1, 2 Punch!

punch

In our last blog post we spoke about the incredible power of our unique style of Acupuncture to deal with the pain of migraines..  But Acupuncture only represents 1/2 of our arsenal for helping people suffering with chronic migraines.  The secret of our success with these patients is that our Phoenix office combines Balance Method Acupuncture with the best of Naturopathic therapies to get to the root cause of what’s causing the migraines.

So let me pull back the curtain and share with you some of the ingredients in our Natural Medicine secret sauce.

Naturopathic Testing 1,2,3…

The trick to solving any problem, whether it’s in mathematics, research or medicine is to gather the right data.  Data, Data, Data!  The need to dig underneath the surface of a patient’s migraine history with proper examination techniques and laboratory testing is paramount!  Here are a few test that we do routinely:

1) Orthostatic Hypotension  – When the body changes position blood follows the force of gravity and can pulled in various directions.  When we are lying down and then suddenly stand up, the blood needs to be quickly and forcefully pushed upwards to keep our brains suffused with oxygen so we don’t get woozy and pass-out!  This requires a transient increase in systolic blood pressure that is governed by a complex physiogic network that has the adrenal glands as a central player.  Failure to achieve this spike in blood pressure on standing can indicate a weakness in the adrenal glands.  Adrenal weakness can result in increased inflammation, changes in vascular function and poor response to pyschological stress – all of which can be huge factors in the formation of migraines

2) Food Sensitivity Testing – Many people can intuitively comprehend the idea that certain food reactions could contribute to migraines.  MSG has rather famously become associated with triggering migraine headaches in susceptible people.  Other food products such as aspartame and sulfites have also been talked about as potential migraine triggers. What’s important to realize, however, is that any individual can be reacting to ANY food in a way that triggers a migraine. That’s why we rely on in-depth food sensitivity testing to evaluate potential adverse reactions to foods.  We focus mostly on IgG sensitivities – a type of immune response that can be delayed up to 48 hours.  It’s impossible for most people to figure out their IgG sensitivities without testing.  If a person has canteloupe monday at lunch and gets a migraine Tuesday evening, they’ll be hard pressed to figure out that they are experiencing a sensitivity reaction to yesterday’s canterloupe.

3) Hormonal Testing – Have you ever noticed how so many female migraine sufferers are worse just before their periods?  For many women this is because progesterone levels are experiencing a rapid

menstrualsurge and then equally rapid decline to their lowest levels of the month.  This sudden drop-off of progesterone (along with changes in estrogen levels) can trigger vascular changes that result in debillitating end-of-the-month migraines for thousands of women.  By testing their hormone levels – typically through saliva samples -we can detect subtle imbalances in the relative levels of the various sex hormones.  These imbalances can then be corrected using either nutraceuticals, acupuncture or as a last resort Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT).

Putting it All Together: Natural Medicine + Acupuncture = No Migraines!

When you put together these diagnostic techniques with state-of-the-art natural medicine, Oriental Pulse Diagnosis Sessio and Balance Method Acupuncture you have a prescription for a powerful, Solution Oriented approach to healing migraines once-and-for-all!

We feel so Blessed to bring this approach to our patients at Solutions Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine.  Please help us in our mission and share this post and the previous one with any of your loved ones who either suffer from migraines or are physicians working with migraine patients.

An Acupuncture & Naturopathic Home Remedy for Sinus Congestion

The Naturopathic Sinusitis Home Remedy Secret

socks

This one’s a crowd pleaser:  One of the foundational modalities of Naturopathic medicine has always been Hydrotherapy.  From turn of the century health sanitariums promoting hot-and-cold baths, to the healing waters of natural springs – using water to heal is as old as medicine itself.

One Hydrotherapy technique that has stood the test of time is the Wet Socks Treatment.

“Wet What?!” you gasp.  Yes, “Wet Socks!”

Phoenix Naturopath Socks it to Sinus Congestion

The Wet Socks treatment is a simple home remedy for treating sinus congestion.  Here’s how you do it.

Take 2 pairs of socks.  It works best if one is a thin cotton sock and one is thicker wool, but any socks will do really.

Wet the thin pair of socks with tap water.  (some people recommend cold water but I do not.  Use room temp).  Then wring the wet pair of socks out so that they are damp, but not dripping all over the floor.

Put the wet pair of socks on your feet.  (Yuck! This will feel pretty gross!)

Next, put the dry, preferably thicker, pair of socks on over the wet ones.

Now, jump into bed!  (Best to put a towel down under your feet so the dampness doesn’t seep through onto your sheets)

If you lay pretty still the wet feeling will fade into the background and beleive-it-or-not, most people report a very deep night’s sleep.

Here’s Why it Works:

As you sleep, your body is going to want to get rid of that wet irritant is senses on your feet. So all night long it’s going to be shunting blood and lymph from the upper part of your body down to the lower parts – to raise the temperature of your feet and dry them.  When you wake up, both pair of socks should be totally dry and your head should be a whole lot clearer!

I usually tell my patients to do the Wet Socks treatment for a few nights in a row and then take a few nights off.  Repeat for a couple of rounds if needed.

Not for Everyone

Now, because this is the internet, I have to just add a few words of caution before a viral Wet Socks craze sweeps the nation:

This home remedy is not for everyone and it’s not a cure for sinus infections.  If you have a foot problem, either pain, inflammation or infection, I would not recommend this.  This is also not advised for people who are very weak or deficient – either with long term illness, heart disease, recovering from cancer, children or the elderly or just a more fragile constitution.  If you have any questions what-so-ever that means it’s not for you until you get cleared by your personal physician.

But for otherwise healthy adults, the famous Wet Socks treatment can be a magic non-drug answer for annoying sinus congestion.

The Single Most Important Dietary Change You Can Make – An Acupuncture & Naturopathic Perspective

Naturopathic Dietary Recommendation for Chronic Illness

gluten_freeOkay, I know people are going to get mad about this one.  You can say, “show me the study!”, “Where’s the science?” – but I’m just going to tell you from my over-a-decade’s worth experience in naturopathic medicine; If there’s one dietary change that is most helpful for a person with chronic pain or illness, it’s to go Gluten Free.

The Staff of Strife

It’s very controversial, I know, to make any kind of blanket recommendation that every one with chronic pain or illness should follow.  But in our Phoenix Clinic, we see this so consistatnly that it’s simply worth trying.  Get rid of the gluten!

Gluten is a protein found primarily in wheat, spelt, rye, most oats and barley.  Gluten is sometimes called an “Anti-Nutrient”.  It’s theorized that it’s purpose was to act as a sort of micro-poison to preven predator insects from eating it before it could fully mature and spread its seeds to the wind.

When we eat this Anti-Nutrient it causes all sorts of aggravation to our systems, from full blown allergy attacks to more subtle immune system stress.

But My Allergist Said I’m Not Allergic to Gluten…

Even if allergy tests to gluten have come up negative in the past, it still pays to eliminate it for a while to see how you feel.  There are many different types of immune reactions, IgG, IgE, IgA, etc and usually tests just measure one or the other.  Also, you can be sensitive to gluten without having a classic allergy.  This can mean that gluten is causing some minor gut irritation and compromising digestion but the reaction is not mediated by a single class of immune cells.

Dr. Lamson of the famed Tahoma Clinic claims that anyone with a serum triglyceride level below 50 is assumed to be gluten sensitive untill proven otherwise – if below 75 it is highly suspected as well.  It’s a sign that you’re not absorbing your nutrients properly – a symtpom of subtle gluten intolerance.

Try It for 30 Days

I tell people who are resistant to giving up their bagels and pasta (even though they make delicious gluten-free alternatives now) to just try it for 30 days and see what happens.  Most people report pretty significant reduction in pain, fatigue and digestive complaints.  Patients with autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis have some of the most profound effects.

As a Naturopathic Physican and Balance Method Acupuncture practitioner, I have many powerful tools at my disposal for fighting pain and dis-ease.  This is such a simple yet effective self-help step that people can take on their own that it’s just crazy not to give it a try.

So toss the kaiser roll and go gluten-free for a bit.  Your baker may hate you, but your body will thank you!

Solutions Acupuncture Featured in Natural Living Magazine

Dr. Steven Ehrlich, NMD Published in Natural Living Magazine

garlic

It’s a funny thing being a naturopathic physician in a digital world.  Having been involved in Holistic Medicine for well over a decade now, providing expert review for publishers of Alternative Medical info and doing a fair amount of writing and speaking myself, word gets around.  We routinely have people from all over the country contacting our Phoenix Acupuncture clinic with questions on some topic I’ve either written about, spoken about or reviewed.

My latest publishing opportunity is one I really want to share with everyone, because it’s on a topic that I think is often overlooked;  I ‘ve just written an article for Natural Living Magazine on the anti-allergy effects of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE)

Acupuncture is About Digging Into the Past to Benefit the Present

Combining an extremely old, classical style of acupunture, with cutting-edge Naturopathic medicine, I’m always straddling the ancient and modern worlds.  I can tell you first hand that “new” does not alwasy mean “improved”.  If you pay any attention to the natural medicine world you see that supplement manufacturers are in a constant race to find the new “magic bullet”.  But few of the latest “breakthroughs” can hold-a-candle to our old friend Garlic.

Since the begining of medical history, Garlic has been prized for it’s healing properties.  From the Pharaohs of ancienty Egypt to the great Hippocrates himself, Garlic has been a medicinal superstar.

In my research for the Natural Living article, I was very impressed by some of promising anti-cancer properties of Aged Garlic Extract.

I think it’s time we take a second look at Garlic – and hope you all will take a look at Natural Living magaznine. – I’ll let you know when the next issue drops!

How Long Will It Take Me To Get Well Using Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine?

Do Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicine Work Quickly?

Fix Me Now…!

That’s how we all feel when we’re sick.  To be honest, that’s how I feel when I come down with the slightest cold: I’m impatient, annoyed, and want to be over it NOW!

This mindset is encouraged by conventional medicine as well. This last week we’ve been battling some ear infections at home, and just to cover all bases we brought the kids into the pediatrician.  Her immediate response was to write a script for anti-biotics.  Now I genuinely respect our pediatrician and I’m not one those Naturopaths that’s religiously anti anti-biotics, but I do believe that there’s something to be said for using them conservatively.

It occured to me that we don’t allow kids to be sick anymore.  I remember when I was a kid and I got sick I’d be in bed for a good part of the week reading comic books and eating toast. Today, we let kids stay home for 24 hours, medicate them and ship them back to school. What’s going on here?

The same is true with chronic health problems.  Athough practicing balance method acupuncture in Phoenix for the over a decade now allows me to witness some rather miraculous, instantaneous results – it’s important to recognize that acupuncture is a process – much like physical therapy is a process.  It’s not uncommon that we see people with so many health complaints that they run out of room on our intake form!  Sometimes these same people will be 20-30% better after a couple of treatments and instead of celebrating, their frustrated that their still 80% sick.  This is when patience becomes necessary.

Testing the Healing Waters

Quick fixes can be great or they can be a slick cover-up that leads to more problems later on. So how do you know what to expect?  How long should healing take?

At Solutions we’ve come up with a formula that helps us answer the important question of “How Long Will it Take?”  Here’s what we do:

  • Every patient starts out with a physical exam that includes Oriental Pulse Diagnosis; That way we know the real cause of the  dis-ease.
  • Next, every patient get’s 3 treatments in close proximity.  We call these the Rate-of-Response treatments and they’re more diagnostic than therapuetic: Basically we’re testing your sensitivity to this type of treatment to gauge how you will respond and how quickly.
  • Then we put together a game-plan.  We write-up a strategy for getting you well and the tactical steps that we are going to need to get there; including an estimate of how long it will take.
I call this process “Map Questing” – We are trying to figure out how to get your from point A to point B and how long the journey is going to take.
I think our “Map Questing” process is one of the reason’s we are blessed with such phenomenal results.  Patients know where they are in their recovery plan and know that they are committing to a finite process.

Congratulations Naturopathic Graduate

Treatment should have a begining and an end!  There’s nothing we love better than graduating a patient from treatment.  I hum a few bars of Pomp & Circumstance and we all wish our graduate well.  Just this morning we had a patient who originally  came in with debilitating migraines and fatigue graduate from treatment a totally transformed person.  After going through our “Map Questing” process we were able to estimate her treatment almost to a bullseye (she was scheduled for one additional treatment next week that she just doesn’t need right now!)

To summarize, healing is a journey, but like any journey it pays to have a plan and a good map and to take the shortest most expedient route.  Using our unique blend of Balance Method Acupuncture & Naturopathic Medicing along with our “Map Questing” process gets real, lasting results in the shortest time possilbe.  We’re pretty proud of that!

imfl-conversations-accupuncture_treatment

What are your thoughts on the healing journey?  Do you think it would be valuable to have a solid-plan before trying a new type of treatment?

3 Things You Can Do to Radically Improve Your Health – An Acupuncture & Naturopathic Perspective

Start Feeling Better in 24 hours

3At Solutions, people come to us with some pretty serious medical conditions.  Many of them have heard about our unique style of Acupuncture and the powerful effects of combing this style with advanced Naturopathic therapies.  But when they come to our Phoenix clinic, I always interested in the simple things that they are doing on a day-to-day basis that may be impacting their health positively or negatively.  Below are 3 things that I wish every patient would do.  I’m not saying that these things will “cure” all your problems, but it will sure make my job easier and it may just transform your health in unexpected ways.

1. Cut the Grains

If there’s one dietary strategy that I see consistently make a positive impact in chronic illness, it’s going from a predominantly grain based diet to one where grains are eaten only sparingly. Unless a person has some kind of wasting condition, such as HIV or cancer where they are stuggling to keep weight on, grains serve very little healthful purpose for most people.  Glutenous grains, such as wheat, Rye and most Oats typically do more harm then good, despite the advertising campaigns touting “Whole Grain Nutrition!”.

Grains cause problems for two main reasons: They are highly allergenic, and they cause all sorts of blood sugar nuttiness.

It’s amazing to me how many people have sensitivites or allergies to grains.  Gluten and non-gluten grains as well.  These may be subtle reactions, beyond notice for the most part, except when they have the cumulative effect of day-after-day causing chronic inflammation and irritation in the gut and immune system.

Eating grains is like sending your blood sugar on a roller coaster ride.  Most grains are so heavily processed that they turn to sugar in a blink of an eye and send your blood sugar soaring.  This triggers a massive, emergency release of boat loads of insulin which bring the sugar level down by storing the sugar as fat.  Usually insulin will overshoot – leaving you with lower blood sugar than when you started and jonesing for more starchy snacks.

Ditch the grains and get off this ride.  A small portion of rice or rice cakes compliment a meal nicely, but look for quality proteins, plant starches such as squash and sweet potatoes and lots of leafly greens for vitamins and minerals along with healthy fats to make-up the bulk of your meals.

2. Go to Bed!

The fantastic Naturopath, Dr. Charlie Cropley has a great line that I often repeat. “You have fatigue?  How ’bout a good night’s sleep.  How ’bout a good night’s sleep night after night after night!”  It’s so true.  In our busy lives, sack time is one of the easiest things to steal from to make room for other things.  But hear this folks; Sleep is Medicine!

When we skimp on sleep, our immune system, our nervous systmen and our hormonal system are all knocked off kilter.  We become more susceptible to colds and flus and miss valuable self-repair time.

Want to get over an injury? – Sleep …an infection? – Sleep … A chronic illness? – SLEEP!

Sleep is the body’s opporunity to recharge and reset its many clocks.  Give yourself a good night’s sleep night-after-night and you’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel!

3. Write It Out Loud

In the book The Artist’s Way, the author Julia Cameron prescribes and exercise for unblocking creativity – I see it as a powerful medical intervention.  It’s called “The Morning Pages”, and here’s how it works:  Every morning you sit down with a pen and a notebook and you write 3 pages on NON-STOP writing.  Meaning, as soon as the pen touches the paper you don’t stop moving, you keep writing no-matter-what until you get to the bottom of that 3rd page!  Even if you don’t what to write, you can just write “I don’t know what to write…what am I doing this for” (and I often add for my patients..) “..Dr. Ehrlich is out of his mind for making me do this!”  Whatever it is just DONT STOP WRITING!

What’s the point?  The point is detox.  This is not a writing exercise; it’s going to the bathroom.  You’re roto-rootering a drain pipe from your brain, down your arm onto the page, where every morning you can deposit your psychic debris and wipe your hands of it.  Pretty soon you’ll come to value this time as a sacred moment to release inner tension, spark new ideas and get to know your inner voice; but it takes discipline.  You have to stick with it a while, but if you do, this exercise will free you from layers and layers of psychic tension and break the shackles of old emotional pain.

Unecombered by all that emotional baggage, your body and spirit will shine and you’ll enjoy a new level of mental and physical vibrancy!

3-_fancy

There you have it;  things you can start doing today to make tomorrow a whole lot healthier.

Have you committed to any of these 3 changes before? Let us know what the experience was like for you!

Acupuncture & Naturopathic News- Low Vitamin D Levels found in Orthopedic Traumas

Vitamin D: Naturopathic Powerhouse

dman

A new report by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (not known to be a hot bed of alternative medicine sympathizers)  made a startiling announcement at their 2012 meeting; over 77% of Orothopedic Trauma patients had Vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency.

The implications of this finding are profound: Over 300,000 hip fractures occur in the United States annually.  Add to that vertebral fractures and other broken bones and we see that Orthopedic Trauma is common. Approximately 15-20% of patients with hip fracture die within 1 year of their fracture.

In this context, Vitamin D may be a life saving medical breakthrough.

 The Un-Vitamin

230px-Cholecalciferol-3d

Vitamin D actually meets the definition of a Hromone.  It’s synthesized in the body and acts all throughout your system.  Vitamin D has potent immune modulating effects and some doctors are even touting it as a potent-antiviral medication.

We make Vitamin D in response to sun-exposure.  Unfortunately, with the prevelance of sun cancer we’ve had to become somewhat sun-averse and in turn are producing less vitamin D.

It’s high-time that Vitamin D testing becomes as routine as cholesterol testing.  Ask your doc for a Vitamin D3 level at your next physical. In our Phoenix clinic we routinely run Vitamin D3 levels on our patients.  Acupuncture always works better when a person’s nutritional status is optimized. For otherwise healthy patients we shoot a target range at the higher end of normal – (around 55 ng/ml) of course everyone’s needs are different.

We’ll talk more about Vitamin D in future posts, but I could not wait to pass on the news about this Orthopedic study.

This is the year of Vitamin D!

Have you had your vitamin D level tested?  Have you supplemented with Vitamin D?  Tell us about your experience.

How to Get your Sparkle Back – an Acupuncture Testimonial

Phoenix Acupuncture & Naturopathic Clinic Puts the Sparkle Back for Mother of Two

You know how some people just have that certain quality; that energy, that radiance, that sparkle?  Well, when we first met Ilana she looked like someone who was SUPPOSED to have that sparkle, but it just wasn’t there.  Where did it go?  Well, that’s a long story, but as an entrepeneur, mom of two adorable but active little ones and someone who had suffered with chronic back pain for years, Ilana was pretty close to being burned out.

Life Kicks the Sparkle right out of us

I firmly believe that we are all born with this radiant quality of “sparkle”, but life – with it’s twists and turns, bumps and bruises – has a way of knocking that sparkle right out of us.  So much so that when we see someone who still has this vibrant quality we are immediately attracted to them; they have what we lost!  Some people call it charisma or passion – it’s that magic combination of the joy of being alive and the commitment to get the most out of the experience.

When we meet a patient for the first time and start going over their story, it’s easy to see where they lost their sparkle.  Besides the physical or emotional illness they come to Solutions seeking help for, they’re also looking to get that sparkle back.

Qi Happens!

We have a little saying here at our Phoenix clinic, we say “Qi Happens!”.  Meaning that the the resurgence of the energy of life, the vitality of being, the re-awakening of our life force…it happens!  It’s possible to get that sparkle back and we know how to do it!  Using our unique style of Acupuncture, blended with cutting-edge Naturopathic therapies we are able to

  • Remove Stagnation
  • Restore Vitaly Energy
  • Balance Hormones
  • Purge Toxic Emotions
In short, we are able to bring that “Sparkle” back.

I wish I had a before picture to show you, but watch this 30 second video below to hear the fabulous Ms. Ilana’s story.
